learning from NYC and the Netherlands
PS21 (Portsmouth Smart Growth for the 21st Century) brought an inspiring speaker to the Portsmouth Library last night. Matthijs Bouw, founder and principal of One Architecture, spoke about the historical and current techniques employed by the Netherlands to keep assets and communities dry. He also presented his work with NYC to adapt to increased sea level, storm surge, and precipitation. In partnership with other firms, City departments, and organizations throughout the city, One Architecture has developed an array of potential design solutions to mitigate the impacts of climate change while improving the function, aesthetics, and use of waterfront space. If NYC can work with nature rather than fight it, can't we all?
